This includes rent for the facility, meals, security, medical supplies, communications and operating costs.

Since July 2021, Fourth Street’s quarantine and isolation program has served 561 individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

“We are incredibly grateful for the vital services Fourth Street Clinic provides to those experiencing homelessness and providing COVID response service to this vulnerable population,” said Mikelle Moore, Intermountain Community Care Foundation’s president and Intermountain’s senior vice president and chief community officer. “We stand with the clinic in our conviction to helping our communities that are struggling through the COVID pandemic and we invite others to join us in supporting the important work the Fourth Street Clinic leads.”

In the summer of 2021, the Fourth Street Clinic began managing Salt Lake County’s quarantine and isolation operations. The clinic coordinates with multiple homeless resource providers and local businesses to provide services such as canned food, catered meals, transportation to the facility and more while clinic staff works with the clients throughout the week with regular medical check ins to monitor COVID symptoms while in isolation.

Janida Emerson, Chief Executive Officer of Fourth Street Clinic, says this funding couldn’t have come at a more crucial time.

“The reality for us here at Fourth Street Clinic is that COVID is moving far faster than we have the resources for,” Emerson said. “The recent spike of Omicron cases in Utah filled our current quarantine and isolation space to capacity—and honestly, we began to worry how this program would continue with such a massive spike in cases. The support from the Intermountain Community Care Foundation in the eleventh hour means these services are still available to our vulnerable neighbors through this current surge.”

On January 4, 2022, the Salt Lake County Health Department issued a public health advisory due to the substantially high COVID-19 transmission rates. In addition, the increased risk of reinfection and spread of Omicron has dramatically increased the need for quarantine and isolation placements.

While Fourth Street Clinic will be pursuing state funding for operation in February and March, the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund would support Fourth Street Clinic until that time.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox selected former Utah Senate President Wayne Niederhauser in April 2021 to serve as the new state homeless services coordinator.

“I appreciate the Fourth Street Clinic for providing vital services to Utahns experiencing homelessness, especially during the Covid-19 Pandemic,” said Wayne Niederhauser, chief administrative officer of the Office of Homeless Services.

You too can help Utahns experiencing homelessness during this critical time. Donate to Fourth Street Clinic today and put health care into the hands of our vulnerable neighbors.

The post Fourth Street Clinic Receives Contribution from Intermountain Healthcare for Emergency COVID Quarantine Services appeared first on Fourth Street Clinic.

Fourth Street Clinic announces RFP for a Strategic Plan Consultant

James Jarrard

News

Wasatch Homeless Healthcare, dba Fourth Street Clinic is seeking proposals from qualified consultants to assist with the development of a comprehensive strategic plan that will guide its direction over the next 3 to 5 years. Salt Lake County Health Department allocated 80 doses of the vaccine to Fourth Street Clinic late January, increasing access to the vaccine for vulnerable populations in the county. The clinic serves vulnerable and low-income populations in Utah, the majority of these experiencing homelessness.

Janida Emerson, CEO of Fourth Street Clinic, says the first wave of vaccines will be at the clinic downtown for those 70 and over.

“It’s difficult enough for someone experiencing homelessness to access basic health services, like getting vaccinated,” Emerson said. “Asking someone without transportation to drive to a county vaccination site ultimately means they won’t get the vaccine. We asked the county to allocate doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to increase access to those most affected by the virus.”

Fourth Street Clinic now offers the COVID-19 vaccine to patients 70 and over at their downtown site. The clinic’s Mobile Health Care program also takes the vaccine to the homeless resource centers and other locations to clients 70 and over.

Emerson says any remaining vaccines will be tiered for those with underlying health conditions; any clients at the homeless resource centers willing to be vaccinated; any unvaccinated staff members at community partner sites; and household members of Fourth Street Clinic staff providing direct patient care. Clinic staff received their first round of the COVID-19 vaccine at the end of December.

Fourth Street Clinic’s 2020 Pandemic Response

Fourth Street Clinic performed more than 10,000 COVID-19 tests in 2020, playing a key role in mitigating the spread of the virus among those in community shelter and camping outside. The added workload put a strain on providers and staff at Fourth Street Clinic; Janida Emerson says the clinic is trying to secure additional staffing to help vaccinate the state’s most vulnerable population.

“We really need to focus on widening the pool of who gets the vaccine, rather than double up on what the county is already doing,” said Emerson. “This will really be an ‘all hands on deck’ approach, but we’re excited to play our part in this.”

When you donate to Fourth Street Clinic, you put high quality health care into the hands of homeless Utahns.

DONATE NOW

The post Fourth Street Clinic to begin offering COVID-19 vaccine appeared first on Fourth Street Clinic.

New winter hours for 2020 begin Monday

James Jarrard

News

In March, Fourth Street Clinic moved the majority of its operations to tents pitched in the parking lot to keep staff and patients safe from COVID-19. Emerson has served in the role of Interim CEO since mid-January.

“When Janida assumed the role of Interim CEO, no one imagined the tumultuous year ahead,” Kim Wirthlin, Fourth Street Clinic Board Chair, said. “Her smart, strategic and collaborative approach to operating a community health center during a global pandemic proved her capabilities as an exceptionally strong and effective leader. The Board of Directors is confident that under her leadership, Fourth Street Clinic will weather this uncertain and extremely difficult time and move forward long into the future with even greater unity and strength in fulfilling its mission to provide high-quality health care to individuals experiencing homelessness.”

Prior to Emerson’s interim leadership, she was the Chief Operating Officer at Fourth Street Clinic, where she increased Medicaid eligibility, transitioned staff to a new electronic medical record, and helped create a culture of teamwork and integrity. As COO, Emerson also spearheaded the clinic’s Integrated Behavioral and Medical Health program, which provides patients with coordinated, holistic health care services that are patient-centered and trauma-informed.

Janida Emerson received her Master of Science in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. After graduating, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the US Government Accountability Office on their Health Care team. In 2011 she began working with community health centers in Utah as the Government Affairs Manager with the Association for Utah Community Health (AUCH). As an advocate for health centers, she worked on issues related to implementation of the Affordable Care Act, workforce loan repayments, and Medicaid. Through her work with AUCH, she also began working with the public behavioral health system and developed a passion for working with individuals with addiction and mental health disorders.

“Over the past six months, Fourth Street Clinic has seen incredible difficulties working on the frontline during this global crisis,” said Emerson. “The adaptability of our staff to respond to a widespread crisis in complete synergy has been remarkable. I have been so impressed with the compassion I see our providers and staff display on a daily basis, not just with our patients but with each other. I am proud our patients are treated with dignity and respect—regardless of their background—when they come to Fourth Street Clinic. I am honored to officially accept this role and am eager to take on new challenges and move this organization into the future.”

The post Fourth Street Clinic Announces New Leadership appeared first on Fourth Street Clinic.

Fourth Street Clinic privileged to serve those from all backgrounds

James Jarrard

News

A statement from our interim CEO For more than 30 years, Fourth Street Clinic has had the opportunity to serve Utah’s most vulnerable and disenfranchised. We see firsthand the impact of racial, ethnic, and income disparities every day with the individuals experiencing homelessness that visit our clinic.

The death of George Floyd spurns on the ideals of equality and justice for all. His is just one of thousands of injustices against individuals of color—particularly black men and women—in the US each year. We can no longer continue in this manner; we stand with our community in advocating for continual change to ensure peace, happiness and good quality of life for all.

Fourth Street Clinic is an inclusive and diverse organization and we do not tolerate discrimination of any kind in the workplace. We believe equality and justice are deserved for all and remain committed to empowering every race, religion, and gender identity to speak up on behalf of their rights. We are committed to continuing to combat racism within our community. Black Lives Matter.

I am continually impressed with the compassion I see our staff display on a daily basis, not just with our patients but with each other. I am proud our patients are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background, when they come to Fourth Street Clinic. I am proud of our diversity as an organization and our welcome and inclusive environment.

But as individuals, and as an organization, we still have a lot of work to do. We will be sharing additional resources on talking about issues of race and inequality with our friends, co-workers, and family. In addition to this we will be arranging additional trainings around diversity, cultural sensitivity, and biases so that we can continue to improve upon ourselves. We are also working on bringing in outside support for staff to allow for them to discuss their thoughts and feelings in a safe space. I hope that we can continue to build upon our strong foundation and continue to have conversations on treating each other with kindness and respect.

Statement from Janida Emerson, Interim CEO, Fourth Street Clinic.

The post Fourth Street Clinic privileged to serve those from all backgrounds appeared first on Fourth Street Clinic.

Updates on COVID-19

James Jarrard

News

At Fourth Street Clinic, your health and safety are important to us. It will also make its way to other nonprofit agencies throughout the valley for vulnerable individuals unable to travel to the main clinic, which located across from Pioneer Park.

Laura Michalski, CEO of Fourth Street Clinic, says a mobile clinic is an essential part of the transition from a single downtown homeless shelter to three new homeless resource centers located throughout Utah County.

“Access to health care is vital to escaping homelessness,” Michalski said. “We anticipated the need for medical care at the new resource center sites but lacked the bandwidth for a clinic at each one. Mobile Health Care lets us deliver a clinic right to the people who need one most.” Nearly $1 million in funding was awarded by the state last July to build the mobile clinic, with continued operations coming from state funding, donations and grants.

Fourth Street Clinic’s brick and mortar clinic will remain downtown, where more extensive services like dental care and a full-service pharmacy are available. Patients of Mobile Health Care can also get referred to the clinic for more specialty care like gastroenterology or gynecology.

Preston Cochrane, Executive Director of Shelter the Homeless, sees Mobile Health Care as the next step to expanding services for homeless Utahns.

“Fourth Street Clinic’s new mobile medical unit is an innovative intervention that will facilitate direct access to health care by providing a range of service to guests staying at the Resource Centers whose healthcare needs may otherwise go unmet,” Cochrane said. The design of the new resource centers kept Fourth Street’s mobile clinic in mind to streamline the patient intake process. “By delivering the necessary services right to clients’ doorsteps, we can reduce unnecessary emergency room visits and improve quality of life.”

Mobile Health Care is expected to start serving clients at YWCA, First Step House and Housing Connect (formerly the Housing Authority of the County of Salt Lake) later this month before the new resource centers open later this summer.

The post Fourth Street unveils mobile clinic serving homeless Utahns in Salt Lake appeared first on Fourth Street Clinic.
