Scott Williams, MD, MPH, Chair

Dr. Scott Williams spent the first decade of his career as a University of Utah faculty pediatrician providing care to children at the Salt Lake Indian Health Clinic, Salt Lake County Health Department inner-city clinics, and the Utah Migrant Health Clinics across the state. The next ten years were spent at the Utah Department of Health serving as the Director of Family Health Services, Deputy Director and Executive Director during the administrations of Govs. Michael Leavitt and Olene Walker. For the last ten years he has been affiliated with the Mountain Division of the Hospital Coporation of America, first as the Chief Medical Officer of its ten hospitals in three states, and then for the last two years focusing on the development of HCA's electronic medical record pilot project at St. Marks Hospital. He received a BA in American literature, Masters of publich health, and MD degrees at the University of Utah and completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin.

Jeff Jensen, Vice-Chair

Jeff has served as Chief Financial Officer of Intermountain Healthcare's physician group since 2015, with physician practices across the State of Utah. Prior to his current assignment, Jeff served as the Finance Director/Chief Financial Officer with Intermountain Medical Center, located in Murray, Utah. He has also served as Chief Financial Officer with IASIS Healthcare at a hospital and regional level. Jeff has a BS in accounting from Weber State University and a Masters of Business Administration from Utah State.

Thomas Miller, MD, Treasurer

Dr. Miller is the Chief Medical Officer of the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and an Associate Professor of Medicine. As Chief Medical Officer he manages the Medical Staff Office and Office of Graduate Medical Education. He is the Secretary of the Medical Board and supports the President of the Medical Board. Dr. Miller supports and directs the activities of subordinate medical directors throughout the system's hospitals and clinics. Dr. Miller completed his medical degree at George Washington University in 1988 and residency and chief residency at the University of Utah in 1992.

Karen Shepherd, Secretary

Karen is a former member of Congress and Utah Senator who now serves on several corporate and community boards. She has had a long and varied career that began when she taught freshman English and literature at the American University in Cairo and at BYU. She then served as assistant director and later as first female director of Salt Lake County Social Services. After serving in the Utah Senate and US Congress, President Clinton appointed her to be the US Representative at the European Bank for Reconstruction and development in London.

Garrett Barnes

Garrett is a Senior Vice President at Zions Bank in the Premier Wealth Management Division. Garrett has a deep passion for people, life and giving back to the community. He is actively involved in committees that seek to meet the needs of the homeless population with serious health concernes, and is an active speaker and an empowering leader in his free time. His passion for Pediatric Feeding Struggles drives him to advocate for children that are 100% tube fed due to total oral aversion. This has him speaking locally and nationally to medical communities as well as educating parents and insurance providers on the issue.

Stephen Beyers

Stephen has served as a Vice President in Commercial Banking and as a Business Banking Manager at Banner Bank, formerly AmericanWest Bank, since 2007. Steve has a wide range of financial expertise, having worked in commercial lending and executive banking at Zions Bank prior to his move to AmericanWest. He received his bachelors degree in business management and economics from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1982; he also holds graduate degrees in commercial lending and in banking.

George Durham II, MD, FAAP

Dr. Durham is an Adjunct Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine — having served on the Admissions Committee since 2014. He holds a BA in biochemical sciences from Harvard College and graduated from Duke University's School of Medicine in 1973, completing his residency in pediatrics at the University of Utah in 1976. He practiced with Bryner Pediatrics from 1976 - 2014 and is a past medical staff president, chair of Quality Improvement and former member of the Governing Board of Primary Children's Hospital. He was a pediatric volunteer physician at the Fourth Street Clinic in the mid-90s and has served on Fourth Street Clinic's board since 2012.

Rev. Elizabeth Hunter

Rev. "Libby" Hunter is a Deacon at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark and is active in interfaith and community activities. She retired from employment with the State of Utah, primarily working with public assistance, employment services and programs to assist low-income households. From 1999-2003 she was the director of the Jubilee Center, a co-location center for small non-profits, religious organizations, arts groups, community organizations and support services for low-income households. She is the past chair of the HIPUtah Board (state high risk insurance pool). In 2015 she was the Host Diocese coordinator for the triennial General Convention of the Episcopal Church.

David Leta

David Leta is a partner at Snell & Wilmer, a law firm in Salt Lake City. He is a financial problem solver, and for over 40 years has represented debtors, creditors, trustees, and other parties in all aspects of financial disputes. David's experience enables him to analyze a financial situation from multiple perspectives and design creative, durable solutions. As an advocate, he handles litigation for clients involving the United States Bankruptcy Code, the Federal and Bankruptcy Rules of Procedure, the Uniform Commercial Code and applicable state laws. David also serves as a neutral in mediating financial disputes for non-clients.

Jason Lilien

Jason is a Managing Director at Goldman Sachs. He currently is co-head of Global Private Wealth Management Operations. He has worked for Goldman Sachs in Salt Lake City since 2001, and in New York City since 1996. He currently serves on the Operations Risk Committee, the People Development Committee, the Operations Fraud Sub-committee and the Payments Sub-committee. Jason earned a BS in Business Administration from the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York in 1993. He and his wife Roberta have three children and live in Sandy, Utah.

Marilynn Paine

Marilynn currently works at the University of Utah in the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry on special projects. She served previously as the Assistant Vice President for Health Sciences Strategic Initiatives at the University of Utah. In this position, she was involved in or led several initiatives that span traditional academic units and employ tools around systems thinking. These include ambulatory care process redesign and improving the patient experiences in the clinical enterprise. In addition she worked on the governance process that led to the establishment of the University of Utah School of Dentistry, and helped shepherd through governance the new Population Health Sciences Department in the School of Medicine.

Kim Wirthlin

Kim is an accomplished healthcare and university executive leader turned entrepreneur. She is the President and CEO of GetReadyNow, a company built on a passion for fostering confidence, peace of mind, security, and resiliency in the face of emergencies and disasters. She is also the President of Wirthlin Strategies, a healthcare consulting company providing services to clients throughout the country and specializes in health care delivery systems and payer strategies in the health care reform environment. Kim holds a BA and MPA from the University of Utah. She was the recipient of the University of Utah College of Humanities Distinguished Alumna Award and the American Heart Association Go Red for Women Award.

Glen Lambert

Glen is the former Executive Director of Odyssey House of Utah, a substance abuse and social service agency. During his over 30-year tenure, Odyssey House grew from one program with 27 clients to a multi-site agency that serves up to 400 clients daily and a staff of 160. Glen is widely respected as an expert in the substance abuse treatment community and has conducted hundreds of consultations, workshops, classes and speeches in 23 states and seven countries. Glen holds a Master’s of Science in Social Work from the University of Utah. He has been honored with the Governor’s Award, Utah from the Substance Abuse & Anti Violence Council as well Clyde and Marie Gooderham Lecture Award from the University of Utah.

Karen Okabe

Karen holds current and past positions that combine her academic background in esxecutive and cabinet level positions in the state, city and county; she has been appointed by both democrat and republican elected officials. Karen possesses extensive executive experience in human resource management, discrimination and employment law, training and staff development, collective bargaining/labor relations and other related fields. Her background in conflict resolution and certification from the University of Utah in mediation have provided her the opportunity to offer pro bono mediations for th State Labor Division. She is a member of the Utah council on conflict resolution. She holds academic standing with both the University of Utah (adjunct assistant professor of political science) and Brigham Young University (instructor) in both their Masters in Public Administration (MPA) programs.

John Parrish, Ex-Officio

John is the president and owner of Midwest Floor Coverings, the largest locally-owned wholesale distributor of building products in the Rocky Mountain Region. He is a graduate of the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in sociology
